The Virolai is the hymn dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat, known also as the “Rosa de Abril” or April Rose in reference to the beginning of the poem.
It was composed by Fr. Jacint Verdaguer and was published during the Artistic and Musical Competition held on the celebration of the Millennium of Montserrat, 1880. Through the same competition, the award of a golden piccolo would be given for the best adaptation of the text of Verdaguer.
On the 25th of April of the same year, a winner was declared – amid 70 different compositions, Josep Rodoreda won the prize.
